A queen endgame is a strange place. Material looks reduced, yet the board is full of threats, because a single queen can attack from almost anywhere. The defender’s favourite weapon is perpetual check, and the attacker’s main job is to find a safe home for the king while a passed pawn marches forward.

Queen endgame puzzles test exactly that balance: checks, counter-checks and the precise moment when one side finally runs out of them.

The three things that matter most

King safety comes first. With queens on the board, an exposed king can be checked forever. The side whose king has shelter, often behind its own pawns or in front of its own passed pawn, gets to play for a win.

The passed pawn is the engine. The further advanced a passer is, the more it ties down the enemy queen. A pawn on the sixth or seventh rank often decides the game on its own, because the defender has to keep an eye on the promotion square while also hunting for checks.

Centralisation. A queen in the centre can reach both wings, cover the promotion square and block checks. Queens on the edge of the board tend to lose these duels.

Tactics you will meet in these puzzles

  • The cross-check. You answer a check by blocking it with your queen in a way that gives check yourself. The opponent’s attack stops instantly, and sometimes the queens come off into a winning pawn ending.
  • Skewers and forks. With queens and kings on open lines, a check that also attacks the enemy queen, or a check that hits an undefended pawn, appears more often than you might think.
  • Queen trades into pawn endings. Offering a queen exchange is a strong weapon if the resulting pawn ending is a win. The opponent may be forced to accept or allow promotion.
  • Stalemate defences. When a defender has almost nothing left, a queen sacrifice that leaves the king with no legal moves can save the game.

Queen against a far-advanced pawn

A useful bit of knowledge: a queen usually beats a lone pawn on the seventh rank supported by its king if the pawn is a centre or knight pawn. The method is to give checks or pins that force the defending king in front of its pawn, which costs it a tempo, and use that time to bring your own king one step closer. Repeat until the king arrives. Against a rook pawn or bishop pawn on the seventh, stalemate tricks often make it a draw unless your king is already nearby.

Typical errors

The most common one is grabbing pawns while your king is exposed. Each pawn you win may cost you the game if it allows endless checks. The second is pushing the passed pawn without checking whether it can be stopped by a check that also attacks it. The third is giving aimless checks yourself. A check that drives the enemy king toward shelter just makes their life easier.

How to get better at them

  1. List every enemy check first. Before choosing a move, ask what checks your opponent will have afterward. If there are many, your king is not safe yet.
  2. Look for squares where your king hides. In front of your passed pawn, behind enemy pawns, or next to your own queen are typical shelters.
  3. Count until checks run out. In many puzzles the solution is a series of checks that ends with a cross-check or a fork. Follow the line to its end instead of stopping at the first nice move.

Queen endings demand patience and a cold eye for checks. Solving them regularly makes you calmer in the long, nervous endings where most players start to drift.
